St. James the Greater was not canonized. He was proclaimed a saint by early
Christians because of his martyrdom. The canonization process did not
come into existence until the 12th century. In the primitive Church,
martyrs were immediately recognized as witnessing to the perfection of
Christian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love for
Christ by the offering of their lives. By the sacrifice of their lives
for Christ, they attained Heaven in eternal glory and were indissolubly
united to the Lord, the Head of the Mystical Body.
We do not know for sure. However, St. James the Lessor was a cousin of Our Lord so could have been born in or near Nazareth. James the Greater, son of Zebedee and Salome, was a fisherman of the Lake of Galilee, who probably lived in or near Bethsaida. His brother was John the Apostle.
The emblem of St James is the cockleshell. The legend is told that when Saint James' remains were taken by boat to Spain, a man was riding his horse on the beach. The horse saw the boat and plunged into the sea, with its rider, making for the boat. They sank but then rose again, covered with scallop shells.
There are two people named Saint James both of whom were apostles. The titles James the Greater and James the Less were used to distinguish one from the other. One thought is that the "Greater" and "Less" titles applied because James the Greater appears in the Bible more (aka more was written about him) than James the Less -- which is the same distinction between a major prophet and minor prophet in the Old Testament.Another theory was that James the Less was shorter of stature and James the Greater was taller.James the Greater was the son of Zebedee and brother of John (Matt. 4:21), James the Less (also called James the Younger) was the son of a man named Alphaeus (Matt. 10:3).
