the Lord shut his mouth for a purpose and at the right time let it loose. When Zacharias was given a promise and when the promise was getting fulfilled the Lord knew Zacharias would open his mouth and stop or delay the blessing and plan of God getting fulfilled in his life and for the purpose of mankind, so the Lord shut his mouth and set it loose at the right time

God shut Zacharias' mouth because he doubted the angel's message that he and his wife Elizabeth would have a son in their old age. The temporary loss of speech served as a sign of discipline for Zacharias to reflect on his lack of faith and trust in God's promises. It also emphasized the miraculous nature of the birth of John the Baptist.

What does it mean when they talk about gnashing of teeth?

In the bible when they refer to the gnashing of teeth, it means that they were in great anguish. They would tighten up their jaws and groan or cry. Picture when a pirate in a movie gets run through with a sword and they grimmace and say "AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!" with their mouth clinched shut in pain. I know it's silly but it's the first picture that comes to my head when I think of the gnashing of teeth.
