Broadly speaking, in order to face towards both Jerusalem and the rising sun. Many churches are not exactly aligned though -- some used magnetic north to align, which varies over the years, and others are aligned to the location of the rising sun on the feast-day for their patron saint. Plenty are also just twisted around because of requirements of the plot of land, builder carelessness, historical whimsy, and so on.

∙ 12y agoMost Christian churches face east because that's the direction of the Holy city of Jerusalem (or at least it is when you take the starting point of England).
Another reason could be that stained glass windows are often used in churches and if you want to see the sun shining in through the window during service, it would be a good idea to have the window facing east (the direction facing the sun during the normal Sunday service hours).
