Why is Saint Sebastian saint?

St. Sebastian was the captain of the praetorian guard and a favorite of the Roman Emperor Diocletian until he learned that Sebastian was a Christian. The emperor ordered that he be executed so soldiers shot him full of arrows. St. Irene took his body back to her home where she learned he was still alive and nursed him back to health. Once in good health he publicly criticized the emperor who, once again, had him executed, this time by clubbing to death.

Saint Sebastian is considered a saint in the Catholic Church because of his martyrdom. He was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and was subsequently executed for his faith during the persecution of Christians in the 3rd century. Sebastian is venerated as a protector against the plague and is often depicted in art with arrows, which were used to martyr him.

Sebastian was not canonized. He was proclaimed a saint by early Christians because of his martyrdom. The canonization process did not come into existence until the 12th century.
