Because he questioned God
Mary did not doubt the angel. She asked for information: "How will this come to be, since I do not know man?" Zechariah doubted: "How will I know this?" The obvious answer to Zechariah was, "I just told you." That's why he was struck dumb, and Mary was given an answer. Ted Wartman

Zechariah , John the Baptist's father , was given the sign that he would recover his power of speech once the things foretold by the Archangel Gabriel would come to pass ; this was a result of Zechariah's doubt he would be struck dumb and not able to speak until the day that these things happen .
Sarah. God promised Abraham that Sarah would conceive a child, despite her old age and the fact that she was barren. When Sarah laughed, God struck her dumb for the entire pregnancy. See Genesis 17. An angel appeared to Zechariah before John was born and told Zechariah that his wife would bear a son and that he was to name him John. Zechariah at first could not believe this, because his wife was too old to bear children. As a result he was struck dumb until after his son was born. (Luke 1:5-25) When asked what he wished to name the child, Zechariah wrote "His name is John" on a tablet, whereon he immediately recovered his speech. (Luke 1:57-66) The name means "God is gracious" in Hebrew.
