It just means that God asked Cain and Abel to give him sacrifices as an act of worship. Both Cain and Abel knew what kind of sacrifice God wanted - but only Abel gave the right kind. And...are the customs I practice approved by God? It is easy to feel that because a custom or religious practice is old and has been practiced for years, that it gives validity to that custom. But the Bible's example of the Israelites showed that there are practices and religious beliefs that are common today, that are not approved by God, in fact, the Bible shows by his actions, that he hates them.
