Crested geckos were on the extinct species list back in the early 90's. When a hurricane destroyed their natural habitat of New Caledonia, they were forced out of hiding and re introduced to the reptile hobby. Since 1994, the crested gecko population has exploded due to selective breeding. Now, almost 10 years later, the crested gecko is the second most popular gecko pet in the reptile hobby. These animals are no longer considered to be endangered and there are no laws/CITES restrictions pertaining to their keeping in captivity in most areas.
