Does a male or female Hermann's Tortoise make a better pet?

they both are great pets but

if you are looking for a smaller one go with the male it can grow up to 8 inches

but a female can grow up to 10 inches the smaller females are 8 inches so go with the female for big and male for small

I work at a big chain pet store and have cared for a couple different kinds of tortoises but I own a male Hermann's named Lockjaw, and he has his ups and downs. He's super friendly and actually likes to be handled, comes when you call him for new food (seriously), loves cherry tomatoes, and has been healthy since I got him. In general, I'd go for a male because they don't get as huge, especially if you want to keep it indoors for the most part; he's full grown at about six inches and the females can get to be ten inches and much chunkier. I've heard the females are moodier as well. I will say that he eats a TON and always has, and compared to the younger females with smaller tails I have cared for, his poops are huge, way bigger than you think would come out of something so small. If you spot clean it doesn't ever really become a problem but I've gone away and come back to my whole basement smelling like tortoise poop and a dirty aquarium (the urine smells like low tide). His tank is 50 gallons but that is even too small for him because Hermann's are so active, and it takes up an entire coffee table. We let him roam the house if he's being really active in his tank and it's cold outside. With that in mind you would need a significantly bigger habitat for a female when she's inside (depending on your climate you could keep her mostly outside though and just bring her in to hibernate, I live in New Hampshire, not really an option). The summers with either/or would be really fun, they like being outside and mostly sleep during the winter months anyway.

Female ball pythons become larger, so if you want a big ball python then a female.

There is not much of a differece. Females tend to be less aggresive, but males are usually calmer and not as jumpy. So, it just depends on what you rather have.
