Several possibilities. Most people do not know that crocodiles can travel long distances in the sea so either population pressures or flood waters can cause them to leave estuaries such as St.Lucia and move south. Other possibilities are relic populations moving across land to dams and tributaries and finding their way to areas where they were locally extinct, escapees from crocodile farms, and unwanted "pets" deposited in rivers. Crocs occur in the upper Umgeni near Albert falls and have been seen in Inanda dam. Also, canoeists have encountered them sporadically in the Umgeni over the last decades-I have a photo of one shot in the Umgeni in 1969.
