Snakes move mainly by slithering, using long body muscles and scales—especially broad belly scales—to push against ground irregularities. For speed, they add sideways looping, pushing off objects in their path. There are over 2,000 snake species living on land and in water. All snakes shed their skin several times a year, including the eye covering, turning it inside out by rubbing against rough surfaces.
