their tail...long male...short female
Note: you can't really tell the sex of a turtle until after it's a baby. Male map turtles are about 1/3 the size of their females. Male map turtles have a concave under shell. Female map turtles have a convex under shell.
The sex of a turtle is not determined by its pattern. It is usually determined by the shape of the underside of the shell. A male turtle usually has a somewhat concave bottom shell, while a female turtle's bottom shell is more flat. Another method to determine the sex of a turtle is by the shape of the tail. The tail of a male is usually wider and "stubbier" than that of a female turtle. See link below for further information. It includes pictures demonstrating the differences between male and female turtles/tortoises.
It really just depends on the mood.

The male turtles have a longer tails and females has a shorter tails.
Masculine turtles usually:have (slightly) concave plastronhave a bigger tailhave much longer nailsare smaller in comparison - 5 - 8 inches shell full size, compared to 8 - 13 inches for females
I've loved turtles and terrapins all my life. This is what I've learned, and I hope it helps you... Typically, the girl turtle's shell is flat on the bottom. A boy turtle's shell has a concave (bowl shape)on the bottom. This shape comes in handy when turtles mate, as the bottom of the boy turtle's shell must fit comfortably over the back portion of the girl turtle's shell. So, girls have a flat bottomed shell & boys have a "bowl"(or concave)shape on the bottom.
There are a couple different ways to tell the sex of any slider, Both you have to wait till the turtle grows up a bit. One is that the anus is slightly closer to the shell on a female, on a male it is further down the tail. This is for breeding purposes which I am sure makes sense. Two, the front claws of males grow longer than in the back. Females claws are all the same legnth pretty much.
One way to determine the sex of a turtle is by looking at their traits such as tail length, shell shape, and claw size. In some species, males have longer tails, concave plastrons, and larger claws compared to females. However, the most accurate way to determine the sex of a turtle is through a physical examination conducted by a veterinarian or a reptile expert.
A sex position.
The parents have sex and after 4 months the baby turtle hatches
If the bottom shell is convex, it might be female. Also female turtles have the cloaca closer to the body, almost under the overlap of the shell. Male turtles have the cloaca located farther away from the body, about half the distance from the shell to the tip of the tail. Most male turtles have longer claws as well.
