In the same way that any egg does, it protects the developing embryo and nourishes it whilst it's growing. Turtle eggs - like those of other reptiles, are a semi-permeable membrane which absorb moisture from their surroundings. Laying eggs also means the parent turtle can leave them to develop while she goes back to sea to feed.
