They are not an aggressive snake by nature and will often remain motionless if someone walks by. However, they will coil and can strike if they feel threatened.

Prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis viridis)

Found in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta, this snake can reach a maximum length of more than 1.6 metres. They also prefer short-grass prairie and dry, open scrubland. If disturbed, they will defend themselves by coiling, vibrating their rattle and striking. While their strikes are seldom fatal, they are venomous and you should be careful when you’re in their habitat.
