first of all, its not poisonous, its venomous, there's a difference. Second, a Gila monster is not that venomous. its not fatal to humans. they are dangerous because they have very sharp teeth and they don't let go when they bite, causing major blood loss. the second and only other species of venomous lizard is the Mexican beaded lizard.

There are four different species of poisonous snakes in North America. Some would count it as 3 since the Cottonmouth and the Copperhead are related (Agkistrodon family).

Rattlesnake & Cottonmouth. (27 related species)

the Copperhead, (5 related species)

and the Coral Snake.

If you want to count each sub-species then there are approximately 33 different snakes.

There are no 'poisonous' lizards in North American Deserts. However, there is a venomous lizard that is found in parts of the Chihuahuan, Sonoran, Mojave and a small part of the Great Basin Desert and that is a Gila Monster. A poison is a substance that kills or sickens you if eaten. A venom does its damage when injected.
