We have a small Mexican Box turtle, native to our Southern California area, which we rescued from a dog. He (not sure) prefers meal worms, natural worms from the garden and loves snails. He will eat every few days and let's us know as he becomes more active and looks around. He consumes about six medium to large mealworms or one or two snails each time. If not hungry he will just walk away from the food. On occasion he will eat some greens or a small piece of peach. As the winter comes he will naturally increase his intake before hibernating for several months. We have had him for several years now and found little advice from local vets. He is not an aquatic turtle but loves to swim and gets his hydration from absorption, which is when he defecates well.
