What can kill turtles?

Sea turtles are harmed by being drown and weighed down by oil in spills, by eating plastic bags after mistaking them for jellyfish, and by getting caught and drown in fishing nets. Also, sea turtles are hunted down by people for their eggs, leather, fins, and meat. Sharks are another, natural, problem. Sea turtles are often attacked by sharks and somehow survive uneaten. Luckily, there are some good organizations out there that rescue injured and oil covered turtles and eventually release them back into the wild, once they are fully recovered.

The major threat to Sea turtles are:

1. Many of them are eaten by birds and other predators like dogs, jackals etc before reaching the ocean.

2. Also because they die of frustration of not getting out or being hot and tired of trying so the sun dries them up.

3. Natural Destruction like flood, beach erosion etc

4. Strong artificial illumination around nesting beaches which greatly disorients the adult turtles as well as the hatchlings;

5. Harvesting of Turtles & its eggs

6. Degradation, transformation and destruction of natural conditions at nesting beaches from coastal developments

7. Fishermen often catch sea turtles in their nets and by trying to get out the turtle will use up all of its air and drown.
