What can not swim?

I guess a dead fish would not swim too well and neither would a shark that has been prey to shark fin hunters. I do not know of any living normal fish that can not swim. Fish can rest for a few seconds and not swim than but if a fish stops swimming than its vital organs stop working.

If you look at land animals, most are adapted to their environment. It is the same for fish. Salt water fish can live and swim in the sea but they will live in places they are adapted to, like tropical water, shallow water or deep water. Some live living in coral reefs and others like the open water.

One of the main differences for fish is how salty the water is. Some fish live in fresh water, like lakes and rivers. If you put them in salt water they would not survive. In the same way lots of salt water fish would not be able to survive in fresh water. There are also areas like estuaries where fresh water meets the sea where the water is brackish. There are some fish like salmon that can live in both the sea and fresh water but most fish adapted to fresh water would die quite quickly if they ended up in the sea.
