If you can't take the time to read this you can't take care of a tortoise
I'll just provide care for the very common Russian tortoise since you didn't specify (if it's a Sulcata /African Spur Thighed tortoise, do research on their care and you won't want a Sulcata anymore). First of all, I'd recommend an open top, 4ft. by 2ft. by 1ft. (length by width by height and keep in mind this is a minimum- it should be bigger) cage made custom out of wood (it's actually pretty easy). Find a way to suspend a heat lamp directly upside down (must be this way) over one side of the cage. Put a 100watt Zoo Med Powersun Mercury vapor bulb in the heat lamp. Petco and Petsmart sell them, but over charge by $30. Buy off Amazon or drsfosterandsmith.com. Replace this bulb every year regardless of if it still produces light. Your pet will die a very slow, morbidly painful death without proper light. Do not feed the commonly recommended lettuce (Romaine or otherwise) or fruit (fruit is a very, very occasional treat). Feed dark leafy greens (all that I use are: bok choy, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, and spinach) from a grocery store on a plastic tupperware lid. Feed every day as much as it will eat. Put the food tray in the middle of the cage. Have two hides: one on the heated side and one on the cool side. You can simply use those half log things at pretty much any store that sells reptiles (although they're ridiculous for other reptiles). Have a shallow water dish. Surprisingly, the ones marketed for reptiles aren't as good as just a shallow tupperware bowl. Shallow means one to two inches in depth. For the bedding use alfalfa pellets which are commonly available for rodents but work great for tortoises. Bury a stepping stone in the bedding under the heat/UV lamp. This replicates how they bask in the wild. You don't have to hibernate/brumate your tortoise. Be prepared to spend a lot of money on this animal- it's a commitment. DON'T TAKE SHORTCUTS! And have fun!
By the way, I have cared for reptiles for 9 years, and have worked with some of the greatest herpetological and veterinary minds in the country.
