There were never any POISONOUS snakes in the SE USA, there are many venomous snakes in the area though. Also, to answer your question it is declining rapidly as with other species or reptiles and amphibians in the are. I would like to point out that as this happens there will be an enormous rise in rodent populations and crops and houses will be destroyed.
