They can be either. Most snakes are nonvenomous and make good pets, except large constrictors, which have been known to kill humans. About a quarter of snake species are venomous, though some are only mildly so. A few species though have venom so powerful that a bite is guaranteed to kill you if you do not get proper treatment.
