water turtles don't actually 'sleep' the way we think of it. they go into a trance-like state which enables them to remember to resurface for air every few minutes and keep an eye out for predators
To care for a red-eared slider with a swollen eye at home, start by ensuring the turtle's habitat is clean and the water is properly filtered and dechlorinated. You can gently clean the eye with a saline solution made from distilled water and non-iodized salt, using a cotton swab. Ensure the turtle is kept warm (around 75-80°F) and provide a balanced diet with vitamin A-rich foods, like carrots and dark leafy greens. Monitor the condition closely, and if the swelling does not improve, consider consulting a vet remotely or seeking a general veterinarian with experience in reptiles.
We have had a red slider for 10 years. Yes, the same one. We feed him turtle sticks and occasionally dried shrimp treats. He knows when we are coming to feed him and answers to his name by stretching his head towards the voice. I don't recommend playing with him or handling him very much but they are fun to watch explore. Take him outside in warm weather for an occasional airing in the grass, but keep a sharp eye on him. Above all wash your hands thoroughly after any contact with your slider. I hope you have yours as long as we have had Leo!
i have a female turtle and it does not have red eyes. it has light green eyes and black stripes. i dont know about the rest of the turtles since mine is a red-eared slider.

Using human eye drops on turtles is not recommended, as their eyes and physiology are different from those of humans. Human eye drops may contain ingredients that can be harmful to turtles. If a turtle has eye issues, it's best to consult a veterinarian who specializes in reptiles for appropriate treatment. Always prioritize the specific needs of the animal to ensure its health and safety.
