Red-eared or painted turtles are very common pet turtles. Although not as bad as they once were, you still have to be careful of salmonella. A curious child of 5 might like to play with the turtle and then forget to wash up afterwards. I had a red-eared turtle for 6 years, they are very interesting creatures. If you keep them in a small turtle dish they will stay small, and will grow based on the size of the new tank.
