A tarantula habitat for a pet tarantula can be a few different things depending upon where your T is from and what it does.

There are T's that climb and T's that burrow.

For the climbers, it is best to get a soft substrate and some plants. The soft substrate will protect a T a bit more if it falls while climbing and the plants will provide a climbing environment.

For burrowers I recommend a thick layer of soft substrate for them to dig a burrow in.

In both cases potting soil with NO FURTILIZERS is good and can be mixed with vermiculite and peat moss. If using a soil/moss mix 1cup soil:2 cup moss is pretty decent. If mixing vermiculite 1 cup soil:1 cup vermiculite:2 cups moss.

In both cases I also recommend a piece of virgin cork bark for the spider to climb on and hide under. You can usually get them from the pet store in the reptiles section, or if you're adventurous you can hunt for one in the wild. Just make sure there's no mold or rot on it.

If you T is from a desert area they can still enjoy the above substrate or you can simply furnish the bottom of the aquarium with sand.

A water dish should be placed somewhere in there and you're good to go.

A wild tarantula may be found under rocks, logs, plants, and in trees. They basically like a place that is warm enough and secluded enough for them to lay some silk and wait for pray or jump out at it.
