The best advice I can give is - don't buy one - untilyou've done a TON of research into which of the common species would be best for your circumstances. You need to find out the temperature ranges, humidity levels, food, lighting, nearest specialist vet etc BEFORE you get any reptile. Planning on picking the first one you see in a pet shop, putting it in an old fish-tank and expecting it to survive to old age will just result in severe disappointment (and likely one dead tortoise !) . There is NO substitute for research !
The cost of a tortoise can vary depending on the species, age, and where you purchase it from. On average, tortoises can range from $50 to $500 or more. It's important to consider the long-term care and expenses associated with owning a tortoise before making a purchase.
