Answergood question, yes turtles are very inteligant, about three quarters of its head is its brain. Turtles will know there owners after only a month, it will even recognize its food if you hold it up to it.

...the person who answered above is not very intelligent since he/she could not even spell the word properly even though it is right there in the question and a spell checker is available. This same person does not even know the difference between "there" and "their". I don't know how intelligent turtles are, but most likely more intelligent than the person who gave the first part of the answer to the question...

It depends what you mean by 'smart'.

They are an evolved species who have survived for millions of years, so although they don't do many of the things that we do, they are smart in that they have managed to survive not being wiped out so far.

IQ scores cannot feasibly be done with most animals, including turtles. They test several different aspects of intelligence which are difficult or impossible to perform by non-humans. As turtles cannot speak or make a large number of vocalizations, they cannot pronounce words as part of the examination. Even in humans, if the person does not know how to read and write, they would score quite poorly, even if they are quite clever. Turtles would also have difficulty solving most physical puzzles presented as part of an IQ test.

Turtles are smarter than you might think. They are not like cats and dogs, (some when they are called or do tricks) however they do well in the wild. They know what foods they can and can't eat. The desert turtle will plow a cacti over to get to its juicy fruit. A Box turtle will literally run towards an insect or a worm moving on the ground, because it knows it doesn't have much time to get to it. And they usually remember where there dens/ living quarters are. I hope this answered your question.
