I had this same problem. I was wondering how to get the battle pets to attack, and I found out. Here is a list:
1. Get the Necromancer Class
2. Equip a Battle Pet
3. Get the Necromancer Class high enough so that you can use a certain skill (forgot what it's called)
4. Use that skill and your battle pet will attack.
