It's rattle I guess. It's a form of defence and the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is acquired to its climate I'm sure. In order to under stand it completely, I suggest reading a book or something.

It's camoflauge, of couse. It's a way for it to be unseen by its preadators or prey
