Crested geckos were discovered in the late 1860's. They were thought to have gone extinct due to the isolated area they are endemic from. The small islands northeast of New Caledonia in the Pacifica area were still unexplored. In 1994 when a team of scientists and biologists went to study the species, climate, and life in the area, and rediscovered the crested gecko species. To date, the Pacifica area's still have more to discover.
