When born they are very fast swimmers, but very small and therefore vulnerable to many types of predators, including snappers and sharks. They are known to disappear for the first few years of their lives, called "The Lost Years" by researchers as it is speculated they float with the sargassum mats far out to sea, and eat larvae, small fish and algae.
