Research suggests that the ancestor of the komodo dragon was the now-extinct Australian dragon Megalania, which averaged 7 metres in length. Like the Komodo dragon, the Megalania, which was the largest venomous lizard of its time, had skull and tooth adaptations which allowed them to kill large animals through rapid blood loss.
