Like all reptiles, turtles are cold-blooded. This means they can't regulate their own body temperature without outside warmth, so they sit in the sun to warm up so they can go about their daily movements more effectively.

Fine , Calm Weather. Often Frosty Mornings In The Winter.
In North Dakota, painted turtles typically inhabit shallow waters such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers with abundant aquatic vegetation. They prefer environments with warm, sunny areas for basking, often found on logs or rocks near the water's edge. Additionally, they thrive in habitats that provide ample hiding spots from predators, such as submerged plants and debris.

Yes- There are red-eared sliders that live in ponds and lakes. They are quite big and they feed on ducks, frogs and anything they can get hold of. In winter they hibernate and on sunny hot days they all sit on logs floating in the water basking.
