I don't think they can. I think they just hide in their shell and be very scared. But, if they go into their shell they are very protected. A turtle's shell is very hard, almost as hard as a rock, so if any thing that would threaten a turtle would come along it would be fine aslong as it went in it's shell and stayed in their.
