Maybe it is too cold, and it is trying to keep warm. Does the instruction manual say to provide a separate heat lamp at one end to raise the temperature significantly? I bet it does. If you have such a lamp, you could try putting a red bulb in it so it is warmer radiation than a white one. Maybe you have one, but the tank is too tall for the heat to reach the bottom of the tank. Check online to see what the ideal temperature should be in that tank and get a thermometer and measure it.
Maybe it is laying eggs?

it wants to die
yes, they will. They will hibernate in a aquarium. But make sure you put i lot of outside dirt in there, put some so the toad can bury itself. Frogs dont. If you bought it at a pet shop it wont. It will if you cought it outside.
There are a lot of reasons. Usually to protect itself from predators, but sometimes they bury themselves to look for food.
it likes the moist environment!

To create DIY aquarium plant anchors for your aquarium plants, you can use small rocks, lead plant weights, or plant weights made from non-toxic materials. Simply attach the anchor to the base of the plant using fishing line or plant-safe glue, and bury it in the substrate of your aquarium to keep the plant in place.
There are several animals that bury themselves. Lizards, turtles, hedgehogs and the scarab beetle all bury themselves in dirt.
Why would you bury a dog in litter
They do not bury themselves but do live in underground burrows. They do so as they need a place to escape severe weather, predators and a place to have their babies.
No, seahorses do not bury themselves. Chances are they have died and have been consumed by something in your aquarium. If there is rock it is possible they are hiding in the nooks and crannies. However, many pipefish species are difficult to maintain, so in all likelihood they have perished.
A hedgehog will build its den where they feel it is safest; this depends on the species.
