If you ever went to Olive Garden then you know the answer Italians eat the same at Christmas time. Trust me I'm Italian and I know everything.
There isn't a set menu for Christmas dinner like Turkey on Thanksgiving here.
There is a tradition on Xmas eve though. Italian Americans have a dinner called "The meal of the 7 fishes" where 7 different fish dishes are served. There would be fried squid, shrimp, smelts, baccala (salted cod), chowder, clam dishes, lobster dishes, pretty much any sort of fish dish you could imagine (except sushi)
If you've got an Italian coming over for Christmas dinner and you want to make them comfortable... Don't take them to Olive Garden. The food there isn't bad or anything, but it's like taking somebody to "Red Lobster" just because they're from Maine. Italians have an adventurous palate and a holiday meal is an event. The company is more important then the food. Serve what ever you would normally have. Just space out the courses a bit and have plenty of wine and coffee with desert. If you want to make them feel at home, look hurt and ask them if they didn't like something they didn't have three helpings of.
