Determine if you have sealed or unsealed bearings- unsealed you can see the balls in the bearing, sealed, nearly impossible to break. With a 1 peice, remove it through the bottom bracket. You may also have sand or dirt in the bottom bracket, and that may be what it is. It could also be rust, or a broken/dry bearing.
