Split skirts are very full, long skirts that have been cut up the middle and sewn to make very full pants. Women used to wear them in the 19th and 20th century when it was innappropriate for them to wear pants as we know them now. They were usually worn when riding horses, to not have the hassle of a skirt bunched up in front of them, but did not want to reveal their figure.
