Black out fabric is a special lining used to black out a majority of light coming from the window. It has a very thin layer of latex/rubber on the back of the lining that is effective in blocking light. You can buy it in what is called 1 pass, 1 layer of backing, or 3 pass, which is a much denser/thicker coating. You can use almost any fabric for the face of your draperies, and line them with blackout lining. However consideration must be taken concerning the amount of light that will project from the top of the drapes and the side if you do not have a return that holds closely to the wall.
