Retrograde Massage is a useful tool to reduce swelling due to lymph edema. Retrograde means: having or being a motion in a direction contrary to that of the general motion of similar bodies. With retrograde massage the therapist moves the fluids opposite the blood flow (proximal to distal). Retrograde massage for upper extremities starts at of the fingers, applying modest pressure pushing upwards to the shoulder or hip. Lymph nodes located in shoulder and hip recirculate the fluid from the limb into the body for redistribution, thereby reducing your edema.
