Engrave Roller Printing
Roller Printing also called engrave roller printing. It is a modern continuous printing technique. In this method, a heavy copper cylinder (roller) is engraved with the print design by carving the design into the copper. Copper is soft, so once the design is engraved, the roller is electroplated with chrome for durability. This printing technique developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Until the development of rotary screen printing; it was the only continuous technique. Designs with up to 16 colors present no problem in Roller Printing.
Rotary screen printing
is so named because it uses a cylindrical screen that rotates in a fixed position rather than a flat screen that is raised and lowered over the same print location. Rotary presses place the squeegee within the screen. These machines are designed for roll-to-roll (web) printing on flexible materials ranging from narrow web films to wide-format roll textiles.

This is not an easy thing to do. Consult a postage stamp catalog and check the explanations at the front. They usually show how to determine the difference between rotary and flat plat printing. Careful measurements is the best way to tell.

William Purvis and Charles Wilson invented the "self-inking printing press" in 1909, which revolutionized the printing industry by making the printing process more efficient and faster. Their invention allowed for continuous printing without the need to manually re-ink between each page.
Rotary printing is the most common production method for postage stamps today. In the early days of printing, a large flat plate was used to print a sheet at a time. Now that flat sheet has been curled into a cylinder which allows one to feed a continuous sheet of paper through the printing press. Even sheets can be fed through in a much more efficient way. There are some stamp issues that have been printed using more than one printing method. Others have been printed with the cylinder horizontal to the image and vertical to the image, creating a slight variation in the image size, even if the same master die was used. Identifying the printing method can make a difference in the value of a postage stamp. The US 1912-1918 series of stamps are an example of types that require careful study, particularly in the coil issues, as some of the flat plate varieties are very valuable, while the rotary are worth much less.
