Princesses come in all shapes, sizes and styles. From pretty princesses to mythical princesses, there is a costume for the princess in every girl. So whether you are pretty in pink or prefer the dark side of royal life, there is a costume which will let you express your inner princess on Halloween night.
Disney PrincessesDisney Princesses are a staple in the costume department. Girls can choose from classics like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. More modern princesses can choose to dress as Ariel, Jasmine or Belle. And those who love the newest princesses can dress as Tiana from "The Princess and the Frog," or wear a super long wig as Rapunzel from "Tangled."
Fairy Princesses BallerinaIf your daughter cannot decide whether she wants to be a princess, a fairy or a ballerina, relax, she can be all three. A tiara, a tutu and a sparkly pair of wings complete the costume. If Halloween night get too chilly, she can wear a complementary turtleneck under her leotard.
Goth PrincessSo, princesses are not your thing? No problem, go goth. Sparkle-filled tiaras complement a vampire princess just as nicely as a pretty pink gown. A black formal gown, white face powder and black lipstick complete the transformation into dark royalty. Older princesses may can add a pair of ripped fishnet stockings to make the look more realistic.
Other Famous PrincessesThe movies, fiction and video games are all filled with great princesses. Science fiction fans will love Princess Leia. Video gamers can choose from Mario Bros. Princess Peach and Zelda. Movie buffs can dress as Princess Fiona from "Shrek" or as their favorite Barbie princess.
Must-Have AccessoriesEvery princess needs a tiara, but that isn't the only bling she needs to transform. Over-sized, dramatic necklaces and rings are a must. A faux fur shall will keep the chill away on a cold Halloween night. A royal, bejeweled handbag will hold everything a princess needs to look her royal best all night, like lipstick, powder and a special piece of candy or two. And do not forget, every princess needs a fabulous pair of shoes. If Cinderella is your princess of choice, you may want to pack an extra pair of slippers for the night.

With the wide popularity of the Disney princesses, princess costumes are everywhere all year long.
Most toy stores and discount department stores keep princess costumes and accessories in stock year round. Many of these stores have annual and semi-annual toy clearance sales. Princess costumes and accessories are often included in these sales as certain princesses become more popular or as companies change packaging or costume designs. Watch for these sales in January following Christmas and at the end of summer in early August.
Another way to save on princess costumes is to purchase accessories from a dollar store. While there may be a particular dress your little princess has in mind, there is no reason to spend a lot on accessories. Even the more expensive accessories are usually not immune to being broken or cracked if stepped or pulled on.
There are varying qualities of princess costumes. The Disney Store sells more expensive and higher quality versions of its princess costumes than the versions found in discount department stores. If the costume needs to last longer than a couple of Halloween events, a more quality costume might be worth the investment for daily dress up play. In the past Disney begins running sales on its costumes in mid-September.
In addition to toy and department stores, general princess costumes can be found at children's clothing stores, specialty boutiques, resale shops, online auction sites, costume shops and online stores. They are more easily found at these places around Halloween. If the costume is for dress-up play then after Halloween is an excellent time to buy princess costumes for less.
Most fabric stores sell inexpensive costume patterns. Tulle is a very inexpensive material about one dollar a yard and can be used to make a princess skirt or a fairy tutu. Simply add sequins, flowers or bows to dress it up. Wrap a headband with organza and add fake flowers to create a fancy headpiece.

Princess Halloween costumes can be for girls of all ages. It's the one time a year that you get to be someone that you're not and what better person to be than a royal princess? You can create your own look for a princess with some creativity on your part or go with a very well known princess, such as Sleeping Beauty or Snow White. Whomever you decide to be, there are a few things you should look into for costumes.
The costumes that you purchase can be used over and over again if you buy them of quality. This means that while you may decide to be a princess for Halloween, you may also decide to let your little girls play dress up with the costumes throughout the year. This will help you offset some of the costs. If you decide to go as a medieval princess, you may even opt to go to the next medieval faire in your area in full costume.
Once you've picked out your dress, you need to consider your hair and makeup or that of your little one. Wigs can be a great way to get a great hairstyle without having to do it yourself. There's no hairspray involved or a bunch of bobby pins. Instead, you just tuck your hair up inside the wig and you're all ready to go. As for the makeup, even the little girls can wear a little lipstick and eye shadow. If it's you, consider some fake eye lashes, too.
Shoes are important for princess Halloween costumes. You can wear heels as most princesses probably have worn over the years. If it's a young child or you plan to do a lot of walking, though, you may want to think about sandals or flats. Try to avoid sneakers, though, because it may ruin your look completely.
No princess is complete without a tiara. This will finish the look and make you or your little one as majestic as can be. You only get a crown if you're the queen, so make sure you make that distinction.
