There isn't a way to avoid your sexuality, and if it makes you happy why would you try to fight it? Just ignore the people who are bigots and move on with your life, they won't be in it for long.

Fears: When a young person begins to think they might be gay, they get filled with all sorts of fears. It seems to them that just about everyone else is NOT gay. All they hear from their school friends is that it is NOT good to be gay, but something to joke about. The movies and TV are filled with non-gay people. They don't know anyone else that is gay.

Can you change? One or two homosexual "experiments" do not mean you're gay -- lots of people have a few same-sex experiments. This is a very scary time for you. You might try to look around and see if you can change, so that you WON'T be gay. Maybe you can be straight. You have to try!

Try things: You try straight fantasies when you masturbate. You might try a close personal friend of the opposite sex. Give yourself some time here! If these don't work, then you just have to hold tight and stay calm.

Enlightenment: You read more about being gay. You learn that there are actually lots of other people who are gay. You read about gay doctors, gay teachers, gay police, gay inventors and painters, gay novelists and actors. You read about gay gold Olympic divers (Hi, Matthew Mitcham!).

You learn some more: You learn that somewhere between 6% and 10% of us are primarily gay. Most experts think this is mostly genetic. This means that you are born gay. You realize: You didn't choose to be gay. You just are. And when you can accept this, then you can work on being the best gay person you can be.

Sad History: In the past many gay men and women tried to change themselves by marrying someone of the opposite sex. As the years went by they (and their partners) became more and more unhappy and unsatisfied. This was a terrible thing for both of them, especially for the other person, who often had no idea what was wrong.

Be strong: You should not be ashamed or think negative about who you are. There may be tough times with the people in this world who do not accept or understand others who are different. You can be strong. With gay friends standing beside you.

Head up high: Accept yourself as who you are; and in time (if it's not happening already) you will feel good about knowing your true self and most importantly realize that being "you" is the greatest gift you can give to others and to yourself.

You cannot avoid being gay. If you are gay then you are for life. You will need to embrace it as you will not change it. Some people think they can change themselves and lead a straight life but it is never a full loving relationship because they always have the thoughts of the same sex most prominent in their mind. The human brain is a very complex organ and there are still mysteries within to be discovered.

Being gay cannot be overcome--it is an inherent, unchangeable part of you. Research is pointing to a biological if not genetic origin of sexuality, furthermore, so you were gay probably in the womb.

Instead of overcoming gayness, start meeting other gay people and learn how you are so not alone and how many other people just like you are gay, too, and learn to embrace and accept yourself.
