Algernon becomes suspicious of Jack leading a double life when he discovers that Jack goes by a different name (Ernest) in the country and uses this as an excuse to escape social obligations in the city. Additionally, he finds a cigarette case engraved with the name "Jack" which adds to his suspicions.

I think it's because Charlie knows that it's a possibility it might happen to him as well. He's already started to lose his intelligence, just like Algernon, so after Algernon died, he may have come to the conclusion that he'd meet the same fate as Algernon. This is just a thought though. I'm still trying to find the answer myself! XD

I don't think it has to necessarily mean bad things, but I think that neglection leads to feeling unloved is more accurate.
Percy notices that Grover and Mr. Brunner never let him out of their sight and are constantly vigilant when he's around. They are always on edge and seem to be watching over him protectively, leading Percy to suspect that they think he is in danger.
