Scan the material. If you stop worrying about comprehension and just make sure that your eyes see all the words, you can go really fast. The thing is, your *brain* is faster even than your eyes, and if you let go of having to mouth the words or process them completely, you can get a lot faster. In speed reading classes, even when you read faster than you think that you can comprehend, post-test prove that your brain is getting some of the information. Practice just scanning (try taking a pencil and dropping down each line quickly so that your brain is seeing a whole line at a time rather than trying to read word by word, for instance), because studies have also proven that the faster you get while you are practicing speed reading, the faster your NORMAL reading speed gets too.

Depending on the age of the student there are various techniques to increase reading speed. For early elementary students, one technique is to take a "book tour" before reading the book. This is done by giving the student time to look though the pictures in the book before reading, so they can get a feeling of what the book is about. If a child stumbles while reading, they can decode a word through different techniques. One is to look at the picture to see what action is happening, and that may give a clue to decipher a word. Another is to skip the word, and continue reading the sentence to see what word may make sense to complete the thought. This way the educator is not hand feeding the answers to students, but allow the children to decipher the words for themselves. Of course practice is the ultimate key to becoming a faster reader.

You do not need to know, for sure, what to line-out. Instead, rely on your instincts. If you second-guess yourself, leave those words or phrases alone. 14. Write a paragraph about what you read.
    
15. Tell yourself out loud what the material said.
    
16. Read different types of materials.
17. Learn spelling of words. This will help you to improve your reading skills.
18. Write down unfamiliar words and look up what they mean.
19. Read frequently-- it does not matter what you read, as long as you read regularly.
20. Read things you enjoy. Even reading a comic book or a book about a hobby keeps you engaged with reading.
