Edwin believes that Peter tried to take his own life because of the letter he wrote to him, in which Peter expressed his feelings of guilt, hopelessness, and despair. The letter made Edwin think that Peter was in such emotional pain that he may have considered ending his own life. Additionally, Edwin noticed the rope around Peter's neck and the fact that Peter had been contemplating suicide.
