Interesting question... There is a story that a young boy in ancient Japan had to travel a long way with his mother who was suffering from what we would now call Rheumatism. The boy developed a technique of rubbing his mothers joints to relieve her pain. This is apparently the origins of Shiatsu. Another story is that Shiatsu developed from the Chinese Practice of Anma, a predecessor to Acupressure massage. Anma was traditionally practiced by blind people and massage had a stigma attached to it, but the development of Shiatsu was to life that stigma and have the massage form recognised as a true healing art...
