Usually, it will pass on its own. In cases where it doesn't, eventually the casing may erode due to the caustic stomach juices. This can cause anything from minor indigestion, to gastritis, and if the casing leaks enough of the chemicals, it can cause damage to the kidneys, liver and even the nervous system. This is rarely the case, as the battery usually just passes.
