I think it's cheaper to keep it running then to turn it on and off. You can just control it by turning the temp up and down. You can also go to a Lowe's or Home Depot or any hardware store or hardware section and purchase a programmable thermostat which will help control costs. Also keep the filter clean and replace it when worn, this helps also. You can save with the dish washer by using the warm or cold setting instead of the heat setting. Make sure all your appliances are Energy Star Compliant, this is indicated on a yellow sticker.
