If you don't follow the directions and dry them flat, they will more than likely shrink unevenly and the fabric may pucker up. You may be able to rescue the wrinkly fabric with an iron, but if the jeans shrink unevenly, you're out of luck unless you are an expert sewer who can pick open the seams, realign the fabric and then sew them back together. Of course, these disasters may not happen at all, but its better to follow the directions and be safe not sorry.

What will happen if you dry your 100 percent cotton Old Navy skinny jeans in the dryer machine will it shrink or get skinnier?

If you dry your 100 percent cotton Old Navy skinny jeans in the dryer, they are likely to shrink. Cotton can shrink when exposed to heat, especially if it's not pre-shrunk. The jeans may also feel tighter after drying, as the fabric can constrict. To prevent this, it's best to air dry or use a low-heat setting.

Why when I dry flat clothing are the items very stiff compared to items dried in the dryer?

When you air dry clothing flat, they don't go through the tumbling and heat process that helps to soften fibers in a dryer. As a result, the lack of movement and heat from the dryer can leave items feeling stiffer. You can try adding in a softening agent like a fabric conditioner or vinegar to your rinse cycle when hand washing to help soften the clothing.

Branded jeans- 1st time laundering?

Turn them inside-out, button them up, and machine-wash them (cycle doesn't matter) with other things of similar color in COLD water. If you really care about these jeans and paid a lot of money for them, or if they have metal bits (other than buttons) or rhinestones on them, do not put them in the dryer; turn them right-side-out, fold them flat on the seams, and put them on a hanger to air-dry. If you put them in the dryer, make sure you keep them inside-out in the dryer as well. If they have any spandex in them (check the fabric label), dry them on Medium or Perma-Press, NOT high heat. High heat is okay for 100% cotton.
