The first vending machine to ever be recorded was referenced in the work of Hero of Alexandria. However, the first coin-operated vending machines were introduced in the 1880's, and they dispensed postcards. In 1888, the first U.S. vending machine was built by the Thomas Adams Gum Company, dispensed gum, and were found at the train platforms. So in the end, I suppose you could say it was all started by Hero of Alexandria, who was a first-century engineer/mathematician.
