Boy Scouts will do their best to do their duty to God and country; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight ... gangs do not.

In both school gangs and the Boy Scouts the members have a say in choosing the leadership but that is where the similarities end.

Gangs are lead by the most influential person or persons, often through violence or the threats of violence, and the precise leadership structure is often unclear even to the members and leaders.

In scouts the troop is lead by scouts who are usually selected by the scouts based on elections without threats of intimidation. The Scout unit's leadership structure is well defined, clear, and changes frequently in order to allow more scouts the opportunity to experience different leadership roles. The Scout troop operates according to a set of 12 core values; including honesty, kindness, and courteousness; and a leader not exhibiting these values may be reprimanded or removed. While Scout troops strive to be "boy lead" there is adult supervision to help guide and advise them and, at times, enforce the rules. Scout leadership, whether adult or youth, is a service position with the goal being to enrich others, not oneself.
